ONLINE SECURITY
First State Bank is committed to making sure that your Online Banking is safe and secure. With our security infrastructure in place, we are confident that access to your accounts is private and secure.
Encrypted Information
When you log onto Online Banking through our homepage, your login information is SSL protected. SSL technology secretly encodes information (encrypts data) that is being sent over the Internet between your computer and First State Bank, helping to ensure that the information remains confidential.
Encryption helps protect your private information by scrambling it so that it cannot be intercepted and read by anyone else. When you visit a site that requires encryption, your browser will display a key or a lock. If you are not in a secure area, the key or lock will be broken.
For Microsoft browsers: To check your level of encryption, go to the “File” menu, select “Properties”, and then select “Security”. Another way is to select “Help” then “About Internet Explorer.”
The Internet browser used must support a minimum of 256-bit encryption.
Other Security Features
Our firewall protects First State Bank systems by allowing entry only to those who are authorized.
For digital identity verification, the Online Banking system has a digital server certificate by VeriSign that your browser uses each time you sign on to verify that indeed you are connected to First State Bank’s Online Banking.
For your security, Online Banking will automatically deactivate your account after three unsuccessful login attempts within a 24-hour time frame. Online Banking will end your banking session after 10 minutes of inactivity.
User Name and Password
First State Bank provides additional security for your financial information by the mandatory use of a User ID and Password to access account information. It is important that your User ID and Password are kept confidential. Your User ID and Password should be unique and difficult to guess and ideally should have both lowercase and uppercase letters and also numbers. For example, do not create a User ID that is similar to your email address.
VeriSign Secured: Look for the VeriSign icon on First State Bank’s website. To prevent "spoofing" (also known as page stealing) of our website, we have added an additional layer of security called VeriSign. The VeriSign seal permits consumers to verify the legitimacy of our site. Consumers are able to click to a certification page that authenticates the site, if it is indeed ours.
Your Role in Security
While First State Bank works to protect your accounts, you also have a part. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your online experience on the Internet is safe and secure.
Most importantly, do not reveal your online Password to anyone.
Your online Password is designed to protect the privacy of your online information, but it will only work if you keep it private. If you think your online Password has been compromised, change it immediately online.
Create a complex password that:
- Is 10-17 characters in length. The longer the password, the better.
- Includes upper and lower case letters and numbers.
- Has at least four different characters (no repeats).
- Has at least one special character.
- Looks like a sequence of random letters and numbers.
- Is not obvious or easily obtainable information.
Change your password regularly.
- You can easily change your password by going to the Change Username/Password page under Service tab of Online Banking.
Do not leave your computer unattended if you are in the middle of an Online Banking session.
Once you have finished your Online Banking session, always sign off before visiting other sites on the Internet.
Remember to sign out of Online Banking, and close all browsing sessions for security.
- You may not always be at your own computer when you bank online. Therefore, it is important to sign off when you are finished with you Online Banking session and close all open browsers.
Always use your browser’s built-in security features.
Make sure the computer(s) you use has current software security patches and anti-virus software. Anti-virus software requires frequent updates to guard against new viruses.
Install a personal firewall to help prevent unauthorized access to your home computer.
Wireless access should be secured with strong password encryption.
Be suspicious of unsolicited email from a “business” that ask for your password, Social
Security number or highly sensitive information. Legitimate businesses typically do not ask for this type of information over the internet. Contact the business directly to verify the authenticity of the email. Do not reply to or click on any links or pictures in unsolicited emails, especially those asking for personal information.
Do not give out personal or financial information online, via text message or on the phone unless you initiated the contact and know the party you are dealing with is legitimate.
Promptly and carefully review your account statements such as bank statements, credit card statements, as well as mobile phone and home telephone bills for unauthorized charges or activity. Regularly check your statements and account activity online to spot questionable transactions.
Notify First State Bank immediately if you notice any unusual account activity.
